Gujarat Bridge Collapse Kills 3 in Anand District

Early this morning, a Gujarat bridge collapse near Tarapur village in Anand district caused chaos, as a section of the old structure gave way, sending vehicles plunging into the river. Locals say three people died on the spot — one woman and two men.

The bridge was on the Borsad–Tarapur road, used daily by hundreds for school, work, farming supplies. Around 8:20 AM, without rain, wind, or warning — it collapsed.

Crowd gathers at Gujarat bridge collapse site in Anand district

“I was just behind the bike that fell,” said Maheshbhai, a farmer who witnessed the scene. “There was no sound. The road just vanished. Like a trapdoor.”

A small car and two bikes went in. Locals didn’t wait. They ran into the water, ropes in hand, screaming for help. But the current was too strong. The car sank fully.

Warnings Ignored Before Gujarat Bridge Collapse

Villagers had warned the panchayat for months. “Cement was falling. Steel rods were out. We told them, ‘repair this!’ But they said, ‘budget nahi aaya,’” said Rekhaben, who sells vegetables nearby.

There was no warning sign, no load limit board, not even a railing at the break point after the fall. People say the bridge had been built in the 1990s and had not seen any serious repair since.

Families Mourn

One of the victims was 26-year-old Kiran Patel, who was going to work in a nearby town. His family sat silent in their home, dozens gathered around. “He left like every other day. Didn’t even finish his tea,” said his mother, wiping her face with her dupatta.

Another victim was a delivery boy, whose bike and uniform were recovered but body was found hours later. Locals covered him with a plastic sheet until the ambulance arrived.

Officials Arrive Late After Gujarat Bridge Collapse

By the time NDRF teams and the district officials reached, the crowd had swelled. Police had to push people back as divers searched the muddy waters. District Collector gave a brief statement: “We are investigating. Rescue will continue until all missing are accounted for.”

But villagers were not impressed.

“Rescue aata hai baad mein. Bridge girta hi kyun?” one man shouted.

What Happens Now?

As of now, the road is closed. Traffic is diverted through longer village roads. School buses have stopped. Farmers are angry. The market is empty.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel tweeted his condolences. “Inquiry will be held. Action will be taken.”

But no one here is hopeful.

“They’ll come, they’ll go. We’ll still cross broken bridges tomorrow,” said an elderly man, walking home barefoot from the site.
