Six Kanwariyas Rescued from Ganga in Haridwar

Kanwariyas rescued in Haridwar on Saturday after a series of near-drowning incidents in the Ganga river. Six young pilgrims were pulled to safety by SDRF teams in separate operations. The scenes were tense — people screamed, the crowd rushed to the riverbanks, and within moments, SDRF divers jumped in without hesitation.

Kanwariyas rescued in Haridwar. In the Kanwar Yatra procession, kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva

It happened across different spots: Har Ki Pauri, Laltaro Pul, Subhash Ghat. All full of people. Loud with bhajans and kanwar slogans. In all that noise, the cries for help were nearly missed — but someone heard them just in time.

“He went under… We thought he was gone.”

The first incident was around 11 AM. A boy from Bareilly, 22 years old, went into the water with his friends. He stepped further than the rope marked for bathing. One step too far — and he slipped. Gone in a second.

His friend shouted for help. An SDRF jawan, standing barely 20 feet away, jumped in. It took two full minutes to find him — face down, floating. People watching thought it was too late.

But he made it. He coughed out water. His lips were blue, but he was breathing.

Afternoon Sun, More Trouble

By 1 PM, the crowd had doubled. Loudspeakers kept repeating — “Don’t cross the rope. Stay near the bank.” But not everyone listens.

Two more boys — from Hapur — went in near Laltaro Pul. One held the other’s hand and slipped. Both went down together. The crowd shouted, “Bachao! Bachao!”

SDRF divers pulled them out in under five minutes. Both were weak but conscious. People clapped when they came out alive.

A woman nearby was crying. “My son also came this way. These boys are lucky,” she said.

Evening Incident Adds to Kanwariyas Rescued in Haridwar

Later in the evening, near Kankhal, two more pilgrims were pulled out — one was trying to take a selfie in the water. He lost balance. His cousin jumped in after him.

Both needed help. Both were rescued. The local volunteers gave them glucose water and covered them in towels.

By nightfall, SDRF had rescued six in total — from three different spots. All survived.

Officials Helpless as Kanwariyas Rescued in Haridwar Keep Rising

“We’ve put ropes, signs, guards. But people don’t listen,” said a tired SDRF official, wiping sweat from his forehead. “Every year it’s the same. Ganga looks calm, but it isn’t.”

Doctors on duty say it’s not about swimming skill — it’s about undercurrents. “One wrong step and you’re gone,” said Dr. Meera, from the mobile health van near Har Ki Pauri.

More People Coming

Shivratri is near. Lakhs more are expected. More crowds, more risk.

SDRF teams are now stationed every 200 meters across the ghats. Announcements are louder. Police presence is tighter. But officials know it only takes a second for things to go wrong.

“Faith is good,” one constable said quietly, “but the river doesn’t care who you are.”

All six are safe tonight. But the question remains — how many will listen tomorrow?
