Ayan Mukerji Says War 2 Will Redefine Spy Films
Bollywood director Ayan Mukerji has worked on some of the most talked-about films in recent years, but even he admits the script of War 2 caught him off guard. In a recent chat with fans and press, Ayan opened up about how the story took him by surprise — in the best way possible.
“It Wasn’t What I Thought It Would Be”
Ayan shared that when he first sat down to read the War 2 script, he expected something typical — action, style, maybe a revenge plot. But what he got was much deeper.
“It surprised me. The story had more emotion and complexity than I imagined. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days.”
Ayan said this was one of the main reasons he decided to take on the film.
Joining the Spy Universe
With War 2, Ayan steps into the world of Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe, a franchise that already includes hits like Ek Tha Tiger, Pathaan, and War.
This sequel will see Hrithik Roshan return as Kabir, and Jr NTR making his debut in the franchise. The cast also features Kiara Advani, adding more freshness to the story.
Ayan described it as “a huge leap” from his previous work on Brahmastra and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, both known more for emotion and visuals than for hardcore action.
The Teaser and the Controversy
When the teaser dropped on Jr NTR’s birthday, fans were excited. It showed just enough to tease a dramatic face-off between Hrithik and NTR, without giving too much away.
But not everything was smooth. Some people noticed the release date — August 14, 2025, which is also Pakistan’s Independence Day. That led to criticism online, with some asking if the date was a deliberate message. So far, the studio hasn’t responded.

“They’re both passionate and bring so much to the screen. Every day on set feels like something big is happening.”
Mukerji said working with Hrithik and NTR has been a powerful experience.
He also thanked Aditya Chopra, the producer behind the entire Spy Universe, for giving him creative freedom and support.
Looking Ahead
With a talented cast, a director who’s clearly excited, and a big cinematic world to play in, War 2 is shaping up to be one of 2025’s biggest films. It promises big action, emotional drama, and perhaps a few surprises we’re not expecting.
