Civil Defence Mock Drill in States Bordering Pakistan Postponed

By Staff Reporter, June 7 — New Delhi
A civil defence drill that was supposed to happen this week in areas near the India–Pakistan border has suddenly been postponed. Officials haven’t given a full explanation, but local sources say it’s a mix of security reviews, weather conditions, and internal rescheduling.

This drill was planned across Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Jammu & Kashmir, and was meant to test how ready people and departments are for any emergency — whether it’s war, chemical attacks, or natural disasters.

“Log toh tayari kar rahe the. Khaane ka samaan bhi mangwaya gaya tha.”

That’s what one official from Fazilka, Punjab said off the record. People had already started preparing. Some villagers even received notice to be ready for an evacuation rehearsal. Then suddenly, on Thursday night, orders came to hold everything.

Why Did It Get Postponed?

No specific reason was announced. But when asked, one officer quietly said —

“It’s not about threat. It’s just bad timing. A few states are facing internal deployment issues. Plus, rains are coming.”

There’s also talk that some of the central teams — especially BSF and NDRF — are being pulled into other duties. So the coordination wasn’t shaping up.

Where It Was Supposed to Happen

Districts like:

  • Amritsar, Fazilka, and Gurdaspur in Punjab
  • Sri Ganganagar and Barmer in Rajasthan
  • Kutch in Gujarat
  • Samba and Kathua in J&K

These areas are all near the border, and drills here usually involve setting up mock shelters, sirens, and fake evacuation exercises.

So What Now?

Right now — silence. There’s no new date, and no new circular. Some district collectors said they’ll wait for Delhi’s next order.

A civil defence volunteer from Barmer said:

“Training was ready. We were expecting uniforms and food kits this weekend. But now everything’s on hold.”

Should People Worry?

No. Officials have said clearly — “This is not due to any emergency or threat from across the border.”

It’s just internal reshuffling. But yes, it does mean people who were mentally preparing, especially in villages near border fences, are now confused.

Sometimes, drills are more than practice. For many, they’re reassurance. And when they get cancelled last minute — it leaves behind questions.
