IIT-M Grad Rejected By Bengaluru Landlords Due To Religion

An IIT Madras graduate has shared a disheartening experience of being denied housing by multiple landlords in Bengaluru solely due to his religion. The graduate, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that despite having excellent academic and professional credentials, several landlords explicitly refused to rent out properties upon learning that he is a Muslim.

“They seemed fine initially, but as soon as I told them my name or mentioned I follow Islam, the tone changed,” the graduate shared in a now-viral social media post. He added, “One landlord even said, ‘Sorry, owners are not okay with Muslims.’”

This incident has reignited the debate about religious discrimination in urban rental markets in India. Various human rights organizations have called for stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in housing.

आईआईटी मद्रास से स्नातक कर चुके एक युवक ने सोशल मीडिया पर अपनी पीड़ा साझा की है कि उन्हें मुस्लिम होने की वजह से बेंगलुरु में कई मकान मालिकों ने किराए पर घर देने से मना कर दिया।

“सब कुछ ठीक लग रहा था, लेकिन जैसे ही मैंने अपना नाम बताया या धर्म का जिक्र किया, उनका व्यवहार बदल गया,” युवक ने बताया। एक मकान मालिक ने साफ कह दिया, “माफ़ कीजिए, मालिक मुस्लिम को घर नहीं देते।”

इस घटना ने शहरी इलाकों में धार्मिक भेदभाव पर फिर से बहस छेड़ दी है। मानवाधिकार संगठनों ने मांग की है कि ऐसे भेदभाव को रोकने के लिए कड़े कानून लागू किए जाएं।
