Noah Allen Defends Mascherano Amid Criticism

As criticism swirls around Argentina U23 coach Javier Mascherano following a string of disappointing performances, one of his young players has stepped forward in support — and his words carry weight.

Noah Allen, the 20-year-old Inter Miami defender, has openly defended Mascherano, describing him as a “passionate, committed coach” who deserves far more respect than the media is giving him.

A Player’s Loyalty Amid the Noise

Speaking after a recent training session, Allen was candid about the pressure Mascherano has faced in the buildup to the Paris Olympics 2024.

“Look, he’s not just a coach to us — he’s someone who’s walked this road. He’s been in those shirts, felt that pressure,” Allen told reporters.
“What he’s given to the squad, the energy, the focus, the effort — it’s 100%. If we’re not getting results, that’s on all of us.”

Mascherano, a former Argentina captain and Barcelona star, was appointed to guide the U23 team through Olympic qualification and beyond. But after a few lackluster results and growing doubts about Argentina’s medal chances, critics began questioning his tactics and leadership.

A Young Squad Still Finding Its Rhythm

Many close to the Argentina camp believe the criticism is premature. The current U23 team is still developing chemistry, with players drawn from across continents and leagues. Allen emphasized that point too.

“We’re still learning how to play together. The coaching is not the problem — we’re growing, and that takes time,” he said.

Mascherano’s insistence on a high-press, possession-based system has taken time to click. Some say the young team has struggled to adapt, while others argue it’s exactly what they need to develop long-term.

Mascherano’s Legacy Still Matters

For many in the squad, having Mascherano — a player with over 140 international caps and appearances in two World Cup finals — is a privilege. And for Noah Allen, it’s personal.

“When he talks about what it means to wear the Argentina jersey, you listen. Not because he demands it, but because he’s lived it.”

Countdown to Paris

With the Olympics approaching fast, pressure on Mascherano is unlikely to ease. But for now, he has the backing of at least one of his players — and probably many more behind the scenes.

Whether or not Argentina silences the critics in Paris, one thing is clear: Mascherano still inspires loyalty, and to players like Allen, that’s what leadership looks like.
