Joy Turns to Sorrow: Stampede at RCB Victory Parade Raises Questions About Team’s Future
Bengaluru | June 8, 2025 — Just few day ago after Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrated their first IPL title in 17 years, the city was plunged into grief.
Thousands had gathered around M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate what was supposed to be a proud moment. Families, children, elderly fans — all came together to cheer for a team they’ve supported through thick and thin. But the celebration spiraled into chaos. A sudden push in the crowd triggered a stampede. People fell, others stumbled over them. In minutes, the celebration turned into a nightmare.
By midnight, 11 people had lost their lives, and over two dozen were rushed to hospitals, many in critical condition.

“Nobody Was in Control”
Rahul Desai, a 22-year-old fan who witnessed the tragedy, said, “It was all so unorganized. There were no proper barricades. Once the crowd started surging forward, even the police looked helpless.”
Most of those injured were standing near the outer gates where there was no space to breathe, let alone move. Several fainted in the heat. Others screamed for help that didn’t come fast enough.
As morning broke, photos of people crying on the pavement, slippers and phones scattered across the street, and police struggling to calm the chaos flooded social media.

Now, Tough Questions Begin
The incident has prompted outrage — not just from the public but also from cricketing officials. The BCCI is reportedly reviewing the situation, and some insiders claim that disciplinary action against RCB or KSCA is being considered.
A senior BCCI official, speaking anonymously, said, “It’s not just a cricket match. It’s about lives. If a team’s celebrations lead to deaths, it’s our job to step in and make sure it never happens again.”
There is even talk — though unofficial — that RCB’s position in the IPL may not be guaranteed next season if accountability isn’t taken seriously.
Pain and Silence
So far, RCB has remained largely silent. Apart from a one-line social media post offering condolences, there’s been no press conference, no visible outreach to victims’ families.
For many fans, the silence hurts as much as the loss. “They’ve always asked for our loyalty,” said Priya Iyer, a long-time RCB supporter. “Now, when something terrible has happened to us, they’re hiding.”
Closing:
What should have been a week of joy has become one of mourning. RCB’s long-awaited win is now haunted by a simple truth: celebrations without care can cost lives.
As investigations begin and grief settles in, the people of Bengaluru — and the fans across the country — are asking one painful question:
Was it worth it?
